Frequently Asked Questions

Lifeguards have questions about their job. This page is intended to answer the most common questions you may have.

1. What are the pre-season and certification requirements to be a lifeguard?

You must be 15 years of age by the end of the certification class you sign up for. Before you start working, you must complete the Lifeguard Training Class. This class consists of about 30 hours. Click on Training to view available dates.

2. Where will I be working?

There are many different styles of pool facilities and each comes with its own set of pros and cons. We here at Upstate Pool Management will find the best pool that fits your needs. We also try to find a pool that is within 10-15 minutes of your neighborhood.

3. When do you start interviewing?

We will begin new hire interviews as early as January. You can submit your application today and I will contact you as soon as I start scheduling interviews.

4. Do I have to get certified through Upstate Pool Managment?

No, you do not. You can get certified at your school, college, local American Red Cross or YMCA's. You must show proof of your certification in Lifeguarding, CPR (Adult, Child, and Infant) and First Aid.

5. How much vacation time can I take? What if I am sick or need time off?

We only allow Full Time Lifeguards to take seven consecutive days of vacation time. Employees need to realize that many people are relying on them to work their scheduled shifts and to arrive at work on time. Fellow lifeguards, property managers, patrons, Upstate Pool Management, and the neighborhood children are relying on you to be responsible. If you are ill or absolutely have an emergency and cannot make your shift, please notify the office ASAP. It is extremely difficult for your assigned shift to be filled; however, our staffing department will work diligently to accomadate your situation.

6. Do I have to wear a uniform to work everyday?

Yes, this is extremely important. We have a specific uniform for sale here at the Upstate office. You will be required to purchase one, before you start working. You will also be required to wear an Upstate Pool Management T-shirt, everyday to work. All items will be for sale prior to the start of the season.
